Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city is well-known for being a compact city – accessible for walking around in – with no requirement for a car. It is veritable treasure trove of fascinating sites, places of interest, walks, museums, art galleries, theatres, quirky shops, international eateries, and a history lover’s paradise. Annual event include the Rugby Internationals, The Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh’s ‘Open Doors’ and History Day, the world-renowned Edinburgh International Arts Festival (every August), which incorporates the Book Festival, Fringe Festival, Film Festival, Festival of Politics, Jazz Festival, and the wonderful and greatly acclaimed Military Tattoo – held in the Castle Forecourt. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and Christmas celebrations are also shown to a worldwide audience, having achieved the status as one of the best New Year celebrations around the globe. On a weekly basis, there is a Farmer’s Market selling local and organic produce, live theatre, antique auctions, a plethora of live music and arts events, haunted tours of Edinburgh’s closes, Wynds and graveyards, guided tours and walks. Here is but a mere sprinkling of some of those places of interest, which we hope will whet your appetite: Of course - Edinburgh Castle – where you can observe the ‘One O’Clock Gun being fired from the Castle ramparts! The Royal Mile – start at the top and work your way down – you may want to stop at Camera Obscuras, John Knox’s House, Mary King’s Close, Deacon Brodie’s pub, St Giles’ Cathedral, The Whisky Heritage Trail, The Brass-Rubbing Museum, The Museum of Childhood, The Edinburgh Story-Telling Centre, The Scottish Poetry Library… And a host of other sites of interest along, and, just off the route. At the foot of the Royal Mile, is the Scottish Parliament building, and, opposite, The Palace of Holyrood , where the Queen resides when she visits Edinburgh, and Queen Anne’s Gallery. Around the corner is ‘Dynamic Earth’ – telling the story of the period since Dinosaurs roamed the earth - great for children! Walk across the road, and you are in Holyrood Park – a wonderful and instantly recognised Edinburgh landmark! Climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat and take in the outstanding views! Talking of views, stroll up Calton Hill and observe some of the most photogenic aspects of the city – wonderful for pictures at sunset or sunrise – and, 5 min’s walk from the East end of Princes Street. Leith – once a bustling port – now brimming with fashionable restaurants and wine bars located on the waterfront, and where The Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed. The village of Stockbridge, Crammond Village, The Royal Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh’s famous Georgian New Town, The Grassmarket, Lauriston Castle, The Scottish Portrait Gallery, Dean Village, The Gallery of Modern Art, The National Gallery, the Water of Leith Walkways – are just some of the other Edinburgh locations you may be tempted to visit. There are excellent golf-courses in East Lothian – Gullane, Muirfield, North Berwick, Aberlady, and, of course, St Andrews is a mere two-hour drive away if you are lucky enough to get selected in the draw to play there. From the centre of Edinburgh take on of the open-topped tour buses – they include places such as Rossyln Chapel, slightly out of Edinburgh! And, there are an abundance of excellent half-day, one-day and two-day bus tours, at very reasonable rates to places such as: Stirling, Dunfermline, The Highlands, Inverness, Glen Coe, Oban, The Isle of Skye, Loch Lomond, St Andrews… to name a few. In both our apartments we provide not only a Welcome Pack with all the information you may require, but also a Tourist Leaflet information file, which we keep up to date at all times, plus a Tour Bus File, and a Restaurant pack. From Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, it is under one hour by train to Stirling, Berwick in the Scottish Borders, and Glasgow; around 15 minutes to North Berwick on the East Lothian coastal trail; half an hour to Dunfermline;, and, around two hours to Perth.
